5 Reasons to Do an Art Residency

Who does not love some dedicated time in the studio? We think artist residencies are so important, and can impact your entire practice long term! Whether you apply to go to a residency far from home or create one yourself, we believe that this time of focus is crucial to you as an artist.

We believe that art residencies are for everyone, and that you can create this dedicated productive time in your studio even if life constraints prevent you from other types of residencies. We provide a structure for this type of residency through the Thrive Together Network, and we want to share 5 reasons why we believe carving out this type of space for your practice is such a powerful thing to do.

#1- Our Art Is Our Cornerstone

An art residency provides a sacred container of time to focus on the work, to get back to basics, and to come back to our cornerstone - we are artists and we make art. Seeing what you can accomplish when you have the dedicated studio time is such a grounding experience for an artist.

#2- Create a Mental Break

It can be a challenge to make great art while mentally multitasking about other things! By doing an art residency and claiming space in your life and mind you are creating a time to just think about your art. So, participate in a residency and breathe a sigh of relief that you have created space to focus!

#3- Creativity Thrives Under Constraints

Constraints can lead to action and creativity! The month-long residency format provides enough time to really dig into a project and get creative, but it isn’t so much time that you get lost in the weeds…because you have to get it done! Lean into the benefits of those parameters and see what you can accomplish!

#4- Take Up Space

Don’t just take up space with your physical studio space, take up the space in your schedule as well. Label this time as your art residency to tell everyone in your life that you are an artist and you take yourself and your work seriously. You will build your confidence as an artist and get some new attention on your work!

goal setting for artists

#5- Goals Matter

When we have goals and benchmarks in our practice, amazing things happen. An artist residency doesn’t just impact the time during the residency, it pushes you forward throughout your entire year! The power of a residency is that you can then say yes to other opportunities later in your year because of the results of your hard work during your residency.

We hope you will join us for our twice-yearly Virtual Art Residency on the Thrive Together Network so we can follow your progress each week in our live Art & Tea Sessions! As a Network Member we give you the structure you need to create a residency for yourself in your own studio. The best part is, you will have the chance to create your own residency in community with a line up of international artists doing the same thing!

Head to thrivetogethernetwork.com to join and participate in the residency as one part of a full year of THRIVING!
